Greeting from President

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear CPTI Family: students, alumni, faculty and staff, members of the Board, and all our partners who uphold this school in prayer,

It is with gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility that I greet you as the seventh President of CPTI. I thank God for the faithful leaders who have gone before me, and for the sound confession of faith on which this school has been built. I receive this legacy as a trust, not a possession.

 Where theological education begins

For many years, I taught the history of the Korean Church. One lesson from that history has shaped my whole understanding of ministry. The Korean Church did not grow first through great buildings or famous preachers. It grew through the “Sagyeonghoe,” Bible study gatherings held in the winter months. Farmers and their families walked long distances, carried their own rice and cooking pots, slept on church floors, and for a week or more simply read the Word of God together, aloud. Out of those gatherings came the great revival of 1907, and out of them also came the first Presbyterian seminary in Pyongyang. The seminary itself recorded that it had grown "naturally" from those Bible classes.

In other words, the seminary was born from the Word read together. That is where I believe CPTI must also begin.

From Sola Scriptura to Soli Deo Gloria

Our motto is Soli Deo Gloria, glory to God alone. I am convinced that God is glorified in a theological school only when it begins with Sola Scriptura, Scripture alone. My prayer is that every part of life at CPTI, in the classroom, in the chapel, and in our community, will raise servants of the gospel who:

1. Read the Bible: who know the whole of Scripture, read it prayerfully and together, and love it in their own language.

2. Are reborn through the Bible: whose minds, hearts, and lives are transformed by the living Word, not merely informed by it.

3. Preach the Bible: who handle the Word faithfully and unfold it clearly for the congregation.

4. Proclaim Jesus Christ through the Bible: who carry the gospel of Christ to every village, city, and generation of Cambodia and beyond. 

To this end, we will place the reading of Scripture at the center of our curriculum and our worship. Faculty and students will stand together before the Word, not as those who own it, but as those who are addressed by it. Knowledge matters, but our goal is to become people ‘thoroughly equipped for every good work’ (2 Timothy 3:17).

Our shared commitment

I will serve CPTI through honest communication, transparent administration, and faithful stewardship of the resources God provides. I will work closely with the Board, the faculty, the alumni association, and the Presbyterian churches of Cambodia, so that this school remains a servant of the church and not disconnected from it.

When Ezra opened the Book of the Law, all the people stood, listened, understood, and wept (Nehemiah 8). I pray that such a scene will be seen again in Cambodia: the Word opened, the people gathered, and lives renewed. May everything we do begin with Scripture alone and end in glory to God alone.

총장 인사말

주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 은혜와 평강을 전합니다.

사랑하는 CPTI 가족 여러분, 재학생과 동문, 교수와 직원, 이사회, 그리고 기도로 이 학교를 붙들어 주시는 모든 동역자 여러분께 문안드립니다.

저는 감사와 무거운 책임감으로 CPTI 제7대 총장으로서 여러분께 인사드립니다. 앞서 이 학교를 섬겨 오신 신실한 지도자들과, 이 학교가 굳게 서 있는 건전한 신앙고백으로 인하여 하나님께 감사드립니다. 저는 이 유산을 저에게 잠깐 맡겨진 것으로 믿습니다.

신학교육은 어디서 시작되는가

저는 오랫동안 한국교회사를 가르쳤습니다. 그 역사에서 배운 한 가지가 제 사역 이해 전체를 빚어 왔습니다. 한국교회는 큰 건물이나 유명한 설교자로 먼저 성장한 것이 아니라, 농한기 겨울에 열린 사경회를 통해 자랐습니다. 농부와 그 가족들이 먼 길을 걸어와 쌀과 취사도구를 지고 교회 바닥에서 잠을 자며, 일주일이 넘도록 하나님의 말씀을 함께 소리 내어 읽었습니다. 그 모임에서 1907년 대부흥이 일어났고, 평양의 첫 장로회신학교도 거기서 나왔습니다. 신학교 스스로도 자신이 사경회에서 만들어졌다고 기록했습니다.

신학교는 함께 읽은 말씀에서 태어났습니다. CPTI도 바로 거기서 시작해야 한다고 저는 믿습니다.

 “오직 성경에서 오직 하나님께 영광으로”

우리 학교의 교훈은 Soli Deo Gloria, 오직 하나님께 영광입니다. 저는 신학교에서 하나님께서 영광을 받으시는 길은 Sola Scriptura, 오직 성경으로 시작하는 것뿐이라고 확신합니다. 강의실과 채플과 공동체 생활 전체를 통해 다음과 같은 복음의 일꾼을 세우기를 기도합니다.

1. 성경을 읽는 사람 : 성경 전체를 알고, 기도하며 함께 읽고, 자기 언어로 말씀을 사랑하는 사람

2. 성경으로 거듭나는 사람 : 말씀으로 정보만 얻는 것이 아니라 생각과 마음과 삶이 변화되는 사람

3. 성경을 전하는 사람 : 말씀을 바르게 다루고 회중에게 분명하게 열어 주는 사람

4. 성경으로 예수 그리스도를 전파하는 사람 : 캄보디아의 모든 마을과 도시와 세대, 그리고 그 너머까지 그리스도의 복음을 들고 가는 사람

 이를 위해 성경 읽기를 교육과정과 예배의 중심에 두겠습니다. 교수와 학생이 말씀을 소유한 자가 아니라 말씀 앞에 부름 받은 자로서 함께 서겠습니다. 지식도 중요하지만, 우리의 목표는 ‘모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖춘’ 하나님의 사람입니다.(딤후 3:17).

함께하는 다짐

저는 정직한 소통, 투명한 행정, 하나님께서 맡기신 재정의 신실한 청지기 직분으로 CPTI를 섬기겠습니다. 이사회, 교수회, 동문회, 그리고 캄보디아 장로교회들과 긴밀히 협력하여, 이 학교가 교회와 동떨어진 곳이 아니라 교회를 섬기는 학교가 되도록 하겠습니다. 

에스라가 율법책을 펴자 모든 백성이 일어나 듣고 깨닫고 울었습니다(느 8장). 그 장면이 캄보디아에서 다시 보이기를 기도합니다. 말씀이 열리고, 백성이 모이고, 삶이 새로워지는 장면입니다. 우리의 모든 일이 오직 성경으로 시작하여 오직 하나님께 영광으로 마쳐지기를 소망합니다.
